The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development has announced that more than 160 land plots have been handed over to recipients in Gulhifalhu, marking continued progress in one of the country’s major urban expansion projects.

According to the Ministry, the resumption of plot handovers follows revisions to the Gulhifalhu land use plan. These changes were made to ensure adequate space for essential services required to support the island’s future population.

Authorities confirmed that demarcation of plots is ongoing under the updated framework, alongside administrative processing and physical handovers. So far, agreements have been signed with 2,972 recipients, while registration efforts continue. Out of these, 169 recipients have already taken possession of their allocated land.

The programme includes seven different plot sizes, ranging from 1,250 square feet to 3,650 square feet, offering options to accommodate varying housing needs.

The Gulhifalhu land use plan has undergone three revisions and now incorporates designated zones for residential housing, social housing, and key public services. Land has also been allocated for education and healthcare facilities, as well as industrial purposes.

Plans further outline the development of parks and recreational spaces, aiming to create a livable and well-balanced urban environment.

In parallel with plot distribution, infrastructure development has begun. The government has tasked Maldives Transport and Contracting Company and Road Development Corporation with constructing road networks and establishing utility services across Gulhifalhu.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to address housing demand and expand urban capacity in the Maldives.
