President issues a message on United Nations Day
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has shared a message on the occasion of United Nations Day.
The President’s message reads as follows:
Quote:
Eighty-one years ago, the United Nations was founded on the principle that all States are entitled to peace, dignity and sovereignty. For the Maldives, this foundational principle affirms the simple truth, that every State, regardless of size or power, has the freedom and the capacity to shape its own future.
The credibility of the United Nations rests on trust and accountability. It can only be built through respect for international law, consistency between principles and actions, and the fulfilment of commitments. Yet, rising geopolitical tensions, selective application of international law and the struggle to keep pace with the changing world are testing that trust. The human cost of these fractures is devastatingly clear, especially in States like Palestine. Unsustainable debt and unequal access to finance and technology further constrain the development and resilience for Small Island Developing States.
For the Maldives, the freedom to chart our own future must be matched by the means to realise our national ambitions. International cooperation must expand our choices, enabling us to invest in our people, strengthen our economy and build resilience against challenges beyond our borders. It is through this partnership that we aim to realise our aspiration of achieving developed-country status by 2040.
The United Nations must remain as an organisation, where the rights of all States are respected, the voices of all nations are heard, and the destiny of no country should be determined by the power of another. The Maldives remains steadfast with the global community to defend peace, uphold justice and give every State the freedom to shape its own
