6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Northern Sumatra; Maldives Not at Risk
A powerful earthquake struck the Northern Sumatra region of Indonesia this morning. The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has confirmed that there is no threat to the Maldives following this event.
According to the MET Office, the earthquake, which measured 6.1 magnitude, was recorded today at approximately 09:56 AM local time.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia, roughly 2,581 kilometers away from the Maldivian capital, Male'. The MET Office stated that, given the distance between the Maldives and the affected area, no direct impact on the Maldives is expected.
As Indonesia is a region prone to frequent seismic activity, the relevant authorities in the Maldives continue to monitor such situations very closely.
