Muaz Haleem has resigned from his position as Secretary General of the People’s National Congress (PNC), stating that the move is intended to support President Mohamed Muizzu’s efforts to strengthen party governance.

In a statement shared on social media on Saturday, Muaz said the party’s activities must align more closely with public expectations, adding that the role of Secretary General requires a greater time commitment than he is currently able to provide.

“I believe it is essential for the party to have an SG who can dedicate more time to the role than I currently can. Therefore, I have stepped down from the position of Secretary General of the People’s National Congress, effective today,” he said.

Muaz, who also serves as a Minister of State for Defence, was appointed Secretary General in January last year.

His resignation follows a broader wave of changes within the administration, including the recent resignation of ten cabinet ministers. Those ministers also stepped down citing their support for the President’s reform agenda, and new appointments have since been made.

The developments come in the wake of the recent local council elections and a referendum held on April 4. Following the outcome, President Muizzu announced that reforms would be implemented to address public concerns and improve governance.
