The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) of India has issued a special advisory following an increase in the number of Indian nationals involved in smuggling narcotics into the Maldives.

In a statement released on Thursday, the NCB cautioned Indian citizens traveling to the Maldives to remain vigilant. The bureau highlighted that the Maldives has significantly strengthened its anti-drug legislation, noting that serious drug-related offenses may now carry the death penalty. The advisory emphasized that ignorance of a foreign country’s laws is not a valid legal defense and urged citizens to strictly adhere to local regulations to avoid severe legal consequences.

Providing guidance to travelers, the NCB advised individuals to refrain from accepting packages or items from strangers at airports, seaports, or transit points. Furthermore, travelers are urged to maintain constant supervision of their personal luggage and belongings. The Indian High Commission in the Maldives has also echoed these sentiments, calling on travelers to fully respect and comply with the laws of the Maldives.

This advisory follows several recent incidents where Indian nationals were apprehended while attempting to smuggle drugs into the Maldives. Significant cases have emerged over the past two months, including the seizure of 6.7 kg of hashish oil at Velana International Airport and attempts to smuggle narcotics into Addu City by air. Additionally, earlier this month, several Indian women were taken into custody in the Maldives in possession of over 2 kg of illicit substances.

Under Maldivian law, the possession of even small quantities of narcotics can lead to severe penalties, including life imprisonment or the death penalty. Consequently, the Indian government continues to advise its citizens to remain cautious and steer clear of such serious criminal activities.
