Health Protection Agency Urges Public Caution Amid Rising Temperatures Across Maldives

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has urged the public to take necessary health precautions as temperatures continue to rise significantly across various regions of the Maldives.

In its official guidelines, the agency has provided essential information on adapting daily routines during periods of extreme heat. The HPA particularly emphasized the importance of sun protection and maintaining adequate hydration to prevent dehydration.

To shield against harmful ultraviolet rays, the HPA advises the public to minimize outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day. Specifically, it is recommended to limit exposure to direct sunlight between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. In instances where going outdoors is unavoidable, individuals are advised to remain in shaded areas and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing to help keep the body cool.
The HPA highlighted that extreme heat can lead to various adverse health effects. Key symptoms to watch for include:

  • Headaches and dizziness
  • Physical exhaustion and weakness
  • Eye strain or damage
  • Sunburn, characterized by skin redness, blistering, or small red heat rashes
  • Dark-colored urine (a primary indicator of dehydration)

If any of these symptoms occur, the HPA advises moving to a shaded area immediately, increasing water intake, and seeking medical attention promptly if the condition worsens.

Furthermore, the HPA stressed the importance of frequent water consumption to prevent dehydration, even in the absence of thirst. Conversely, the agency urged the public to limit the intake of sugary and caffeinated beverages. When going outdoors, individuals are encouraged to use umbrellas, hats, and sunglasses, and to apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.

During this period of elevated temperatures, the HPA has called for special attention to be given to vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with chronic medical conditions. As these individuals are more susceptible to the effects of heat, the agency emphasized the need for extra vigilance regarding their well-being.
