President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu Declares 2027 as Visit Maldives Year
Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially designated 2027 as ‘Visit Maldives Year’, launching a nationwide campaign aimed at transforming and further strengthening the country’s tourism sector
The announcement was made during the 2026 Presidential Address at the opening of the People’s Majlis, where President Muizzu described the initiative as a “monumental national endeavour.” He noted that the campaign will function as a unified platform, bringing together both local and international stakeholders to reinforce tourism as the Maldives’ primary economic driver
To support the ambitious objectives set for 2027, the Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), in collaboration with a specialised Steering Committee under the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, has already begun an intensive global promotional drive for 2026 and 2027
As part of this effort, VMC will focus on strengthening engagement with key source markets at SATTE 2026 in New Delhi in February. This will be followed by a strong presence at ITB Berlin 2026, scheduled from 3 to 5 March, providing critical opportunities to connect with global tour operators, major airlines, and international media
USD 6 Billion Revenue Target
Under the Visit Maldives 2027 initiative, the government has set clear and ambitious goals, positioning tourism at the centre of national economic growth. A key target of the campaign is to generate USD 6 billion in tourism revenue by 2027, underscoring the administration’s commitment to enhancing the Maldives’ status as a premier global destination
As a major step toward this goal, the government has set a 2026 target of 2.5 million visitor arrivals, reflecting confidence in sustained growth in international travel demand
Inclusive growth forms a central pillar of Visit Maldives 2027, with a strong emphasis on citizen participation and profit-sharing. The initiative seeks to ensure that tourism revenues extend beyond resorts and large businesses, directly benefiting Maldivian communities across the archipelago
The campaign also holds symbolic significance, as 2027 marks the 55th anniversary of the Maldivian tourism industry. The government views Visit Maldives Year as both a celebration of the sector’s legacy and a launchpad for a new phase of sustainable, people-centred tourism development
