Dharavandhoo Airport has entered a new phase of growth following its official handover to Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL), alongside the launch of a major terminal development project aimed at transforming passenger experience in Baa Atoll.
The project, part of a national initiative by the Government of Maldives to strengthen aviation infrastructure, positions IASL as both the airport operator and airline service provider creating a fully integrated travel experience centered around passenger convenience.
The terminal expansion will nearly double the airport’s built-up area from 959 square meters to 1,874 square meters. This upgrade is expected to significantly improve passenger handling capacity across arrivals, departures, check-in, and baggage services.
Currently handling more than eight daily flights, Dharavandhoo Airport plays a vital role in connecting residents and tourists to resorts and guesthouses within the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
The handover agreement was signed by Ahmed Shameem, Director General of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, on behalf of the Government, and Ibrahim Iyas, Managing Director of IASL, on behalf of the company.
This move aligns airport operations with IASL’s broader strategy to enhance national connectivity and service standards. The upgraded terminal is designed with a strong focus on passenger comfort and efficiency. Key features include:
• Architecture inspired by Maldivian marine life, with climate-responsive design elements
• Expanded arrival hall with a baggage conveyor system
• Upgraded check-in area with self-service kiosks
• Larger departure hall with three boarding gates, increasing capacity from 80 to over 175 passengers
• Improved baggage handling and sorting facilities
• Dedicated baby-care amenities for families
• Open-air spaces designed to provide a relaxed and refreshing travel environment
A standout feature of the development is a brand-new executive lounge, offering:
• Seating for over 75 passengers
• Premium comfort zones designed for privacy and relaxation
• Curated refreshments and services
The lounge is designed to reflect the high standards expected of a destination known for luxury tourism.
Strengthening Connectivity and Growth
IASL’s dual role as both airline and airport operator provides operational advantages, including:
• Better coordination between flight operations and ground services
• Direct insights into passenger needs through Maldivian’s daily flights
• Enhanced service consistency across the travel experience
The airport serves both local communities and international visitors, reinforcing its role as a key gateway to Baa Atoll.
Looking Ahead
With this development, Dharavandhoo Airport is set to meet increasing travel demand while supporting tourism growth and regional connectivity. The upgraded facilities aim to deliver a smoother, more comfortable journey for passengers, reflecting the warmth and hospitality of the Maldives from arrival to departure.
