President Muizzu Reaffirms Commitment to Clean Water Access Across All Islands
President Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed that providing safe, reliable, and affordable drinking water to every inhabited island remains a central government priority.
In a statement marking World Water Day, the President stressed that water security is closely tied to the dignity, safety, and equal opportunities of women and girls. He highlighted the unique challenges faced by the Maldives as a dispersed island nation, noting that ensuring access to clean water is among the country’s most pressing national concerns.
President Muizzu pointed out that water shortages—often driven by climate change and supply disruptions—disproportionately impact women and girls. He emphasized that empowering women in water management is essential for sustainable island development and advancing gender equality.
The President also called for stronger water conservation systems, protection of groundwater reserves, and increased community efforts in rainwater harvesting. He underscored the need to build technical capacity and secure climate financing to address water challenges.
Additionally, he highlighted the importance of emergency measures to respond to saltwater intrusion into freshwater supplies and urged closer collaboration among NGOs, utility providers, and development partners to safeguard water resources.
This year’s World Water Day theme, “Water and Gender,” reflects the global focus on the intersection of water access and gender equality. President Muizzu concluded by stating that improving water and sanitation systems is key to ensuring a secure and equitable future for all Maldivians.
